Cinco de Mayo – Margarita Pie, you say?

Hola my friends! Happy Cinco de Mayo! If you work someplace fun, like I do (okay,…most days), you get to enjoy a fun fiesta pot-luck luncheon on May 5th.  Me, I signed up for dessert and dusted off an old recipe for a “Margarita Pie”.

Even my mouth watered at the memory of this light, tasty dessert. Read the rest of this entry

Taste of Mexico: “Buñuelos” with Kahlúa Dip

Standard

Kahlua dip

For a friend’s Mexico-themed get together I thought about bringing Buñuelos like I’ve had at a local restaurant; fried cinnamon sugar flour crisps drizzled with honey or chocolate and topped with whipped cream.  [I also thought about flan… truthfully, I’ve been craving that and found a recipe for a coffee flan that made my mouth water.]

Pucks and Palm Trees

Pucks… and palm trees.

Today is the first day of Fall.  I woke up to a brisk 46F here in Chicagoland. (That’s just a mere 14 degrees above freezing in case you needed the math done.) So, why am I excited about it…? Because it’s just a short NINE more days until the official start of pro hockey.  Chicago Blackhawks Hockey. Woohoo!

……and how do you jump from cold, icy hockey to tropical heat and palm trees, you ask? Good times with Hockey fans. That’s how.

Mexican Riviera – Photojourney at the Maya

One evening on our Mexican Riviera vacation, after the rain stopped, we took a walk around the Iberostar Playa Paraiso Resort.  Just wandered.  Here is what we saw.

The buildings of the Maya are colorful. At every turn through the courtyards there are little Mayan themed details; intricately patterned stones in the walkways, statues, fountains and gardens.

Mexican Riviera – Back From the Maya!

Standard

Hola!   This post is overdue.  I admit it.  I told you we were  going here.… and now it’s been more than two months since we’ve been home from Mexico… It took me  for. ev. er. to get through vacation withdrawal.  I only recently put the luggage away (I know… “slacker.”).  And the little bag of souvenir sand from Tulum had been sitting on the table… waiting. Patiently.     Read the rest of this entry

Mexican Riviera – The Other Side of That Caribbean Pond

I’m getting excited for an upcoming trip back to Mexico and thought I’d share a couple of  pictures from prior trips. There are many popular destinations along the eastern Mexican Caribbean coast…. in Riviera Maya the water can be just as warm and turquoise blue along the shore as the heart of the Caribbean.

Accommodations abound! The lovely Iberostar Playa Paraiso Resort has several hotel options, we enjoy staying in the Paraiso Maya… so much, that this return trip will mark our fourth visit to this property.

Why go back? Let me show you!

Saltwater and My Soul

“Lulled by the gentle, hypnotic rhythm of the surf, humbled by the vast number of stars in the sky.” – Me

Mexico – June 2009

We arrive at the resort in the late afternoon. The usual check-in process, and then off for dinner and a walk through the grounds to see what is new. It doesn’t matter which path we take or direction we walk. The destination is the same;  the beach.  Back home, humidity of this level would be cause for complaint. But here, on the beach the air isn’t “humid” it is somehow silky and of the sea.  The wind is strong – almost pushing its way into my lungs. “Breathe me in!”  The sound of the water is roaring – we can’t see the beach yet, but the sound is there. Calling us to continue down the boardwalk. Read the rest of this entry
